Deya's journey began on the vibrant Texas-Mexico border, where she embraced the richness of being bilingual and bicultural. This early exposure became the foundation for a dedicated career in interpreting and public service.
Her academic pursuits led her to Texas A&M University, where she immersed herself in the study of Spanish Language and Literature. Later, she earned a graduate degree in Latin American Studies from San Diego State University, further deepening her expertise.
With over 25 years of experience in the interpreting field, Deya has excelled as a certified court interpreter, specializing in medical, community, and conference interpreting. Her notable roles within the State Court of Colorado included serving as a Staff Interpreter, Managing Interpreter, Language Access Analyst, and ultimately as the statewide Program Director for the Office of Language Access with the Colorado Judicial Branch.
Deya has also gained valuable experience working with military groups from different countries, including NORAD, NorthComm, and various training groups, as well as being involved in technical conference events. Currently, she concentrates on conference interpreting and collaborates with various organizations to champion language justice, emphasizing its crucial role in expanding participation and access to services. Leveraging her extensive knowledge of government systems and non-profit organization management, she actively contributes to enhancing language services within our communities.
